Simon Sinek in his Ted Talk “How great leaders inspire action” used the phrase, “People don’t by what you do… they buy why you do it!”. Since then, the phase has been used over and over again by internet marketers and leaders from around the world. Today, within this article, I am going to be talking to you about how your journey and story lead to your why. I’m also going to show you how your story and journey can inspire people to take action!
As a coach, therapist or consultant I know many of you have a journey that has led you to where you are today. You may have gone through challenging experiences in your past, which has caused you to look at ways you can better yourself and bring fulfilment in your life. It is through these challenges that you have learned a great deal and have created the life you live today. Now as a coach, therapist or consultant, you have chosen to give back to the world, and pass your message onto others who have followed a similar path. This has naturally become journey and story and leads you to the “Why you do what you do” – This is your personal hero’s journey story, which can be used to effectively communicate your message to others, and inspire them to take action. You may be wondering…
The first thing you have to do is, take a walk down memory lane and revisit your past. As you look at your past, go back to a time where you were unhappy with your life. You may have been low and depressed, facing a health crisis or even lost someone close to you. When you revisit that moment, start writing down how you felt at the time, what were the experiences you were going through.
Once you have written this down, have a think about the people in your life that supported you during this time. This could be a someone in your family, a friend or even a therapist or consultant that was there to guide you.
You then have to look at all the challenges you have faced and the lessons you learned that have helped you to grow. With each challenge, write down the problems you were facing and then write down the what you learned and how it made you feel. You can be as open and transparent as you like. Many of your challenges will be very personal to you and the reason you are writing these down are because, others will be experiencing similar challenges themselves and they will begin to relate this to their own lives.
After you have done that, ask yourself… Was there a pivotal moment in my live where everything shifted and changed? If there was again, write it down and make sure to include how it made you feel. Ask yourself “What is life like for me now?” How is it different from the life you were living prior to your journey and adventure.
Last but not least, we come to the “Why you do what you do?” and this is another process of reflection. As you look back at your past, at all the lessons you have learned throughout your journey ask yourself; “Why am I doing the work I do today in the knowing that others are on a similar path and journey”
Your journey and story will inspire others to take action and work with you. As others read your story, they will relate in back to situations in their own life. It is will be as if you completely understand what they are going through and you can be the person to guide them through a difficult stage in their life. This story has become your own heros journey story as you pass on your message to the world.
